In St. Lucia, shimmering beaches and aquamarine waters border an island filled with jungle-covered mountains and fertile valleys. The highlight of the island's natural attractions is the Pitons, dramatic twin coastal peaks soaring 2,000 feet above the Caribbean Sea. Known as the symbol of St. Lucia, the Pitons were formed of lava and rock from a volcanic eruption 30 to 40 million years ago, and now are covered with flourishing vegetation.

Legend has it that Arawak Indians, who first inhabited the island from A.D. 200 to A.D. 800, made their way to St. Lucia to worship the majestic Pitons. The peaceful Arawaks were gradually superseded by warrior-like Caribs. In 1660, the French were the first Europeans to establish a settlement here, and until the island gained its full independence in 1979, St. Lucia oscillated between British and French possession. The influences of these countries, along with African and Creole traditions, have a marked presence in St. Lucia's culture still today.

St. Lucia's landscape remains relatively unspoiled thanks to the island's conservation efforts. A stroll through rainforests and up mountains will uncover wild orchids, giant ferns and exotic wildlife. Nature lovers can visit Pigeon Island Natural Park for hiking and bird-watching, and not to be missed is the Soufriere volcano, the world's only drive-in volcanic crater. Other activities include golfing, horseback riding, windsurfing, scuba diving, snorkeling and deep-sea fishing.
